Toner Sealed
I purchased a brand new drum and toner for my printer, but it still says "toner life end". ?

The printer is a Brother DCP-7020 that's a few years old. The drum and toner came in the original sealed package so I know it is brand new.

Brother's FAQ said to remove the toner, swish it from side to side, and clean the wire on the drum. The problem does not go away even after I try this.

Could it be something wrong with the inside of the printer? I tried the drum and toner in another Brother printer and there is no error message.

The flag is indeed missing on my starter toner. But as this is a starter toner that came with a new printer, shouldn't it still work? I put the new drum and toner into a new printer and it works fine. There are no error messages.

This seems to point to my old DCP-7020 being the problem. Any ideas?

I am assuming your talking about the drum light is still on after replacing the drum (DR-350). There should have been directions in the box to reset the counter for the drum but here a quick run down:

Drum Rest:
1. Make sure machine is on and drum light is blinking.
2. Press and hold the "GO" button for 4 seconds or until all four lights are lit.
3. Release "GO" button

Drum light should be off now and machine should be ready to print. If the drum light is still on, repeat the procedure with the machine on and front toner/drum door open. Finsh by closing the door.

Toner Reset:

I am assuming a genuine Brother cartridge here and not a remanufactured. The replacement toner cartridge (TN-350) cartridge should reset automatically. If you look at the left end/side of the cartridge while holding it by the handle you should see a half moon slot with a white peice in the haly moon. That is a sweeper flag to reset the toner levels. The flag should be in the 11 o'clock position prior to installing a full cartridge. One installed the gears move the sweeper flag to the 3 o'clock position and in the process hit a sensor in the machine to reset the toner levels.

If you have purchased a remanufactued cartridge and the flag is missing, return the cartridge to whoever sold it to you and tell them to install the reset flag or refund you. We have seen a ton of these rebuilt by people who didn't know what they were doing and didn't install the flag. This issue raises because the cartridge shipped with the machines new is a "starter" cartridge and has no reset flag as it wasn't needed with the first cartridge as Brother set the new toner level to "0" at the factory.
