Mechanic a good paying job?

I'm seriously considering becoming a mechanic for my career. My eventual dream is to open my own small custom car/ general repair shop. I was hoping for input from anyone who has followed this route and could give me advice on how to go about doing this. Is this a lucrative job? I don't care about getting super rich but I want to be able to take the occasional vacation and such. What is the pay difference from working for someone and owning your own place? Would you consider this to be lofty goal or fairly attainable? I'm very skilled with cars and plan on being an ASE master mechanic as far as qualifications go. I know this isn't really car related but I'm putting it here because the people I want to hear from are mechanics, and this is where they go to answer questions not the business and finance section. A good mechanic can always find work, put because they are allot of good mechanics the pay is not all that great.

Now a Master mechanic spends a good part of his time doing Quality control work, making sure that the mechanics under your supervision are repairing the vehicles correctly, you assign who works on what job, verifies that the work was done to standard, correctly and in a timely manner. You will work with the customer service rep, and the parts department. You can figure that you will be spending half your time supervising others, and you would only do the hard stuff.

Your own shop, what mechanic does not dream of his own shop. Shops are expensive, you will have to decide what you want to focus on and just do that part. Otherwise tools are expensive and you never have enough tools and equipment, the newer vehicles often require special tools and equipment, and every year they change and you need more. You will also have other expenses, insurance, taxes, etc everything associated with running a business. Plus these things will take away your time, meaning less time wrenching. You will also find your Competition, every guy with a tool box is out there trying to make money also. But I believe that working for yourself has it's own benefits, and rewards, you won't get rich but life is not to bad.

I would suggest that you gather experience, learn your market, find what you are really good at, and then specialize in that.
