After the mt st Helens volcano erupted, what did the community do to ensure optimum safty ?
The area had been evacuated earlier. Small earthquakes in the area had began around March 15, 1980, which led geologist to fear that something was going on below the mountain. Then there was an earthquake directly below the mountain on March 18. This was followed over the next few days by more earthquakes, cracks in the ground, steam venting from the mountain, and a pretty nasty looking "bulge" rising from the hillside. It was getting pretty obvious that something was going to happen and it probably wouldn't be pretty. The Governor declared a State of Emergency on April 3, including an evacuation of the area.
As expected, an earthquake triggered a landslide, which opened another crack in the ground. The side of the mountain blew out as the volcano erupted. (This happened on May 18, 1980.) There was a loss of life... people had been telling the Governor that they wanted to go home, and the Governor refused. OK, if we can't go home to stay, let us go back for just a little while, to check on our houses and grab a few things. The Governor agreed to that, but the people were inside the blast zone at the moment of eruption. A total of 57 people were killed.
The two most famous deaths were Harry R. Truman (NOT the former President), an old man who lived on Spirit Lake. When the volcano blew his house was buried under the rubble. David Johnston was a geologist with the US Geological Service, and was semi-famous because he had been on TV talking about the volcano several times. He was working in the blast zone that morning and was killed by the blast. Truman and Johnston were never found.
There really wasn't much to be done after the volcano blew. The ash was so thick that helicopters and planes could not fly (the ash would clog the engines) and you had to wear a mask to prevent yourself from breathing in the ash. The lava temperature was 300 degrees. The trees that were blown down were either on fire, or had blocked the roads. Practically the only thing that could be done was to hunker down and wait for the air to improve.
There were some people who made money off the whole thing. People scooped up the ash, filled little bottles with it, and sold them. $3.00 for a 1/2 ounce bottle!
