Motorcycle Licence - Some questions.?
I'm almost 17 and I've got a dilemma. I'm into biking and I'm conflicting with myself over whether to keep my CBT licence and get a 125cc bike or to get a restricted A1 licence so I can buy a larger bike and restrict it to 33hp for two years, then de-restrict it and have myself a full size bike.
However the problem is that I'm unsure of the costs of the latter option. I know if I keep my CBT I can keep it for another year and then simply pay another £70 to renew it, however as I said, I don't know the costs of a full licence.
Here are the Q's
How much does a proper licence cost?
Do I have to renew the licence at any point (if so, how much)?
How much will the lessons cost?
And lastly, which would you do?
Any extra info on the subject would be extremely welcome.
Thanks for all your answers, I know it's a long question.
A full bike licence costs hundreds these days - not the licence itself from the DVLA, but the training- being only 17 you can't do the direct access, so your route will be cheaper, but the course will still likely cost you several hundred pounds.
Do a web search for motorcycle training - you'll find loads of schools online, and some will have their prices on show- it'll give you an idea of what you're looking at, at the very least.
Which would I do? I'd get a full licence, assuming I could afford it.
It's a damn sight harder and more expensive to get a licence these days compared to when I got mine, but believe me- it's worth it. All the best to you mate.
*Edit: I almost forgot to answer this point - no, you don't need to renew a bike licence at any point, though as with all photocard licences, you do have to fork out every ten years to update your photo etc.

If you are shopping for a diamond ring it means looking at many factors. The Four C's of diamond shopping is only the beginning of your search. A quick review: the Four C's are Cut, Carat, Color and Clarity and each will influence the grade that a diamond receives and its inherent worth. Of them, cut may be the most important factor because it so greatly influences the others, but for this discussion we are going to focus on the engagement ring carat size, instead.
A carat is the measurement of weight that is used when discussing stones and jewelry grade metals. A carat is equal to exactly 200 milligrams, which is equal to 0.2 grams. Each carat can be divided into 100 points, so a half carat diamond is 50 points, a quarter carat is 25 points and so on.
Remember, when you are searching for the stone of choice, do not get hung up on carat or size- look for the best example of a diamond which can frequently mean a smaller stone. The reason for that is as complex as explaining diamond value itself.
When a diamond cutter sits down to make that first cut, he is looking at what is essentially a lifeless and rather unattractive gray blob, certainly not the diamond that you think of when you hear the word. He can tell by the natural shape and size of what he is holding in his hand what kind of stone is about to be turned loose; the basic shape and size is going to be dictated by nature, the final value by skill.
An expert cutter can take that shapeless, soulless glob and release the fire and heart of the diamond, maybe several but that takes not only work but cutting- which means that of the size he started with- the stones that are the finished product may be less than half of that. A cutter may make less defined cuts, (poorer quality cuts) to keep the stone's size, but the stone will be of far lesser quality. A smaller diamond that has been cut perfectly will be worth far more than a larger, less expertly cut one.
If you are selecting a diamond by the size, keep in mind that you may be able to afford a slightly larger diamond if you buy one that is sold in the "off" size- a diamond that is judged to be .99 rather than a full carat will be less expensive than the full carat and no one but a diamond expert would ever really know the difference between the two sizes.
A final note on size and carat: if you are truly concerned about the size of the stone, you could opt for a fancier cut than the brilliant or round cut. Because some of the fancier cuts are used to make up for flaws in the raw stone, you may be able to end with a larger diamond than you would assumed possible.
