curly hair crisis?

i have super naturally curly hair (see pics), and i'm kind of in a rut.

it looks awesome when it's wet, but when it dries it never looks the same. if i don't put product in it, it goes CRAZY, if i put a little in it gets frizzy and sort of poofy, and if i put a lot in it looks greasy and gets hard. it's easiest for me is i use a lot of product because eventually the curls soften up if i keep scrunching at them, but this will be a pain once school starts. any suggestions??

i use garnier fructis curl sculpting cream gel.

i'm looking for soft curls that aren't frizzy or poofing two inches away from my head. what products or techniques do you suggest?
