Is a rough country 4" lift for a 2003 wrangler X worth it?
I want to lift my Jeep 4". The rough country kits are affordable but a lot of the reviews online are a little negative, need more parts, need the CV driveshaft etc... Should I just buckle down and get a top of the line kit with all the bells and whistles? Or can the rough country be made worthwhile with ad-ons while staying under the price of a skyjacker type lift?
p.s only going to be doing mild off-roading, nothing extreme.
The Rough Country 4" lift for a TJ Wrangler (i.e., yours) has a good solid reputation. The highlight of the Rough Country lift is that the springs generally don't sag. A lot of lift kits do. Skyjacker and Teraflex are particularly notorious for springs relaxing unevenly after time.
One drawback of the Rough Country kit to hardcore offroaders is that it uses a transfercase drop kit to relax driveline angles. If you are going offroad and putting a lift on, dropping the TCase puts it back into the rocks you were trying to avoid in the first place. If you are only doing mild offroading, you will probably not mind lowering the TCase.
With any 4" lift on a Wrangler, the increased driveshaft angle will cause vibrations. Lowering the TCase helps a little, adjusting the rear control arms helps a little. The best solution is a new driveshaft, along with a slip yoke eliminator. That will be true with any 4" lift kit, simply by the geometry of a Jeep.
Whether you are doing the installation yourself or having it done at a shop, talk to the vendors. If they're worth their salt, they will have experience with the kit you're interested in, and be able to tell you about the nuances associated with any particular kit.
