My cat scratches herself so much and has scabs all over her skin, what can i do?
My cat Roxie has scabs all over her skin i think its from scratching so hard, but what is wrong thats making her so itchy? She doesnt have flees, just scabs.
It sounds like she might have hot spots; itchy places that the cat just can't stop scratching. This is caused by an allergy. Often the allergy is to an unnatural food additive, such as caramel coloring.
When I have dealt with hot spots in the past, I put the afflicted cat on a diet of cooked white rice and chicken for one week (1 part rice to one part chicken). In addition to this, I give the cat 1/2 a benadryl (12.5 mg) once per day. Finally, if the hot spots are really raw, I will put animax cream on the injured area and cover it with a stretchy chenille sock cut to cover the cat's torso like a vest.
To prevent hot spots in the future, I would make sure that the cat is eating a food with as simple an ingredient list as possible and no artificial colorings.
