Can I use pressed palm oil shortening as a skin moisturizer?

I was recently visiting a friend, who got out her tub of pressed palm oil shortening and invited me to try it on my hands. It was a little sticky but seemed to keep my hands from drying out for many hours. (We live at 5500 feet with dry, desert air.) Any comment? Any downside to using shortening as a moisturizer? It's certainly cheaper than commercial moisturizers. Thanks.

I personally would not,but there is a old remedy use vaseline which is much safer on your hands and feet at night and wrap in plastic,in the morning you will be happy with the results...Hope this helps!!
