How can I reverse photosensitivty caused by Benzoyl Peroxide?
I have mild acne. I used Benzoyl Peroxide 5% throughout the winter and it worked very well. However, now that it's spring, I've been out in the sun more and it causes me to break out in very small pimples on my cheeks and forehead. (Which is where I was applying the cream.)
I now know that Benzoyl Peroxide causes free radical damage to the skin and can cause photosensitivity so I've stopped using it. But still, the slightest bit of sun aggravates my skin to break out into this pimple-esque rash. It's not itchy, and does not hurt.
I enjoy being outdoors very much and do not wish to avoid the sun completely. If anyone knows of a way to revitalize skin after Benzoyl Peroxide damage, it would be so helpful!
Depending on how long it's been since you've stopped using benzoyl peroxide, this sounds more like a true photosensitivity reaction that's not caused by benzoyl peroxide. A benzoyl peroxide sensitivity would really just cause you to burn -- not to breakout in a rash post-exposure to the sun. You might be developing rosacea. Sun exposure is a trigger for rosacea flare-ups. Also, there are certain other types of photosensitivity conditions, like PMLE (polymorphous light eruption). However, your condition actually sounds more like a "photoallergic eruption", where something you have applied on your face, (like an moisturizer, or even sunscreen, has caused your skin to have a reaction due to the effect of sunlight on a chemical that has been applied to the skin (often an ingredient in sunscreen, fragrances, cosmetics or antibiotic ointments) or ingested in a drug (often a prescription medicine). Common causes here are: sunscreens, fragrances, cosmetics, tetracycline antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and even some OTC NSAIDs drugs like Aleve and ibuprofen. The key here is that has to be something *currently* on your skin or something you've taken recently -- not something you had on your skin in the past.
Good luck -- only a dermatologist could tell you for sure, but it sounds like something you're currently using on your skin or something you're taking internally which is causing a photoallergic reaction.
